Duncan Sims
Duncan Sims' association with The Spotlight Theatre (which is a foundation member of the Gold Coast Theatre Alliance – affiliated with A.C.T.) at Benowa on the Gold Coast began almost 30 years ago when he enrolled his son into their highly successful Youth Theatre programme.
What began as a mere drop-off, pick-up soon developed into other activities in support of his son’s chosen interest and then having to juggle this with his other son’s involvement in Soccer.
Besides Theatre and Soccer, Duncan also ran an importing business and was President of the P & C where he was raising funds to build a school hall.
Duncan’s theatre presence grew to include building sets and props for the Youth productions which then progressed to include the major productions at the theatre, culminating in Stage Management.
In 2005 Duncan was asked to step into the role of President mid-term due to the illness of the incumbent and has continued in that capacity since; except for several years working in Cairns for his other love – Soccer; returning to the Coast in 2016.
Then, last year, when covid struck; Duncan took on the task of meeting all the demands of the restrictions that covid presented in restoring live theatre to the Gold Coast and was instrumental in Spotlight Theatre being the first theatre in Queensland to reopen on 31st July 2020 with the award-winning production of THE BODYGUARD.
