In the Spotlight: Duncan Sims

Duncan Sims’ remarkable journey with The Spotlight Theatre on the Gold Coast began with a simple act of parenting — dropping off his son at a youth theatre class. What started as a casual involvement gradually turned into a deep commitment to the theatre community, one that has spanned almost 30 years.

Between juggling soccer commitments, running an importing business, and serving as P&C President, Duncan still found time to build sets and props for Spotlight’s youth productions. His behind-the-scenes work soon expanded to include stage management for the company’s major productions.

In 2005, Duncan was asked to step in as President mid-term — a role he accepted without hesitation. Even while spending time in Cairns working in soccer, Duncan remained committed to the theatre. After returning in 2016, he continued to lead with dedication and resilience.

Perhaps most notably, when COVID-19 struck, Duncan tackled the monumental task of reopening the theatre — leading Spotlight to become the first Queensland theatre to reopen post-lockdown in July 2020 with the acclaimed musical The Bodyguard.
