In the Spotlight: Tom Sweeney OAM

Tom Sweeney has been a pillar of Sydney’s North Shore arts scene. From the moment he joined Willoughby Musical Society at just 22 years old in 1969, Tom’s passion for theatre and community has shaped an extraordinary career marked by vision, service, and leadership.

He joined the committee a year later and has never stepped away. In 2007, Tom became President and oversaw one of the company’s most transformative eras: a name change to Willoughby Theatre Company and its relocation to The Concourse, a world-class venue where WTC now proudly performs. Tom was instrumental in both the development of the venue and its opening celebrations, directing The Boy from Oz as part of the inaugural season.

Over his time with WTC, Tom has directed 37 productions, including six Australian premieres, and has taken on countless backstage and support roles — even making the tea. His dedication, humour, and people-first approach have helped make WTC one of the leading community theatre organisations in Australia.
